The Benefits of Pre-Natal Chiropractic Care

If you’re searching for a way to promote health and wellness during your pregnancy, you’ve come to the right place! Dr. Kevin Cressey is certified by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) in the Webster Technique. What are some of the benefits of the Webster Technique and seeking chiropractic care during pregnancy?

The nervous system is the main communication system in the body. During pregnancy, the mother’s center of gravity shifts outward, causing nerves, muscles, bones, posture and joints – including the spine and pelvis – to become unstable. These misalignments are called subluxations. Keeping the spine aligned helps the entire body, including the reproductive system, to work more effectively.

The late Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the ICPA, developed the Webster Technique, a gentle chiropractic adjustment, when he discovered a connection between misalignments of the sacral and pelvic bones and abnormal fetal positioning. This technique reduces interference to the nerve system and balances pregnant women’s pelvic muscles and ligaments. The adjustment also decreases the tension on the skeleton and restores movement and alignment in the pelvic region, allowing fetuses to move into normal positioning (anterior vertex – rear-facing, head down) before delivery.

Pelvis misalignment may hinder the mother’s ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth. The Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics in the July/August 2002 issue reported an 82 percent success rate of babies turning vertex when the Webster Technique was utilized by chiropractors as early as in the eighth month of pregnancy in breech presentations. The adjustment does not involve direct, external forces on the baby or on the mother’s abdomen, is very comfortable, and extremely safe.

The ICPA recommends regular chiropractic care during pregnancy. Regular spinal check-ups during pregnancy can help reduce spinal nerve stress. Ensuring the baby’s optimal positioning at the time of birth can eliminate the potential for difficult labor (dystocia), therefore resulting in a smoother and safer delivery and optimal health for both the mother and baby. Proper pre-natal chiropractic care results in a more comfortable pregnancy and decreases reliance on invasive delivery procedures.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, the other benefits of regular chiropractic care include:

  • Maintaining a healthier pregnancy
  • Controlling symptoms of nausea
  • Reducing labor and delivery time
  • Relieving back, neck, or joint pain
  • Prevent a potential cesarean delivery
